Latinas por el Cambio - Making Change and Taking Names!

The 2012 Latinas por el Cambio leaders have launched 3 exciting projects throughout Boston. Oiste is thrilled to be working closely together with these incredible women as they take on leadership roles within their community and making change one community at a time. If you would like to volunteer or help support the women with any of the project, please contact an Oiste staff member at 617-426-6633.

Meet Group 1 - " Let's Clean -Dejando Huellas" (Leaving Footprints) at the Wake Up the Earth festival tomorrow in Jamaica Plain:

The first project is Lets Clean, an environmental and educational project related to garbage disposal and the maintenance of the common areas in the commercial sector in Centre Street, between Hyde Square and Jackson Square in Jamaica Plain. Tomorrow, the group will be presenting the results of a survey they conducted to gather data from local businesses about their disposal needs and impressions of the area.

Be sure to catch iSkool music performing their original song based on the this group's work!

The second project is "Lee conmigo (Read with Me)", which coaches 20 children from ages 5 to 8 and their parents about the significance of bilingual reading. As you know, ¿Oìste? fought against the removal of bilingual education 10 years ago and we are currently advocating for ELL reform throughout the state. This Saturday will be the group's third week at the Alianza Hispana serving the ESL students from Alianza's Adult Education Program and their children. Elected officials and parents of the children have joined and supported the project by reading to the children in the community. Check out Tito Jackson getting his literacy on!

The third project is Connect, Educate and Activate, which involves restoring abandoned land in the city in order to promote and integrate the community using sport and education as essential instruments for a better quality of living. The group has identified a public lot in Grove Hall and is reaching out the leaders there to offer their assistance in advocating for the redevelopment of this land. On June 2nd, this group is organizing a clean-up day so that on June 9th they can host a community fair educating families, teens and children about domestic violence, drugs, health issues, prevention and sports. Stay tuned for further information!!
